Khao Lak: Pristine, Quiet, and with a Touch of Class

Khao Lak is a small resort area located about 60 kilometers north of the island of Phuket, and along Phetkasem Road. Best known as being a cut above Phuket, this upscale area does not suffer from over-crowding, and is family-friendly even at night, and is also somewhat secluded and quiet.

While one of the hardest hit areas during the 2004 Indian Ocean Earthquake and resulting Tsunami, Khao Lak has bounced back with remarkable Thai elasticity.

Police Boat 813: After the 2004 Tsunami, it was discovered that one of the Police boats guarding members of the Royal family had not been sunk like the other, but instead, had washed inland several hundred meters. The boat remains unmoved today, and stands as a memorial to those that lost their lives to the sea on that terrible day.

Takuapa & Old Town: This is the premier spot to photograph (or just enjoy) olden Sino-Portuguese architecture, or to just about quaint old shops. The village is just a 45-minute drive from Khao Lak and also features a morning fish market.

Lampi Waterfall: If you drive just 30 minutes south of Khao Lak and veer right off highway 4, you will find a very nice waterfall, where the sun’s rays shine through the mist at dusk and dawn. This waterfall is very near the road, so folks who can’t make a long trek into the jungle can also enjoy.

The Yoga Studio: If you need to stretch out after a long scuba dive or a long night in Phuket, then the Yoga Studio might be just right for you or your group, with private classes taught by a certified instructor.
